We’re all Marine

Italy’s Transport Minister, Matteo Salvini, is in a tizzy. He’s fuming over what he sees as Brussels unleashing its “warlike impulses” in an anti-democratic move against one of Europe’s far-right figures, Marine Le Pen. And let’s not forget Viktor Orbán, the life of every Pride party, who simply declares, “Je suis Marine!” The drama unfolds with a French court decision barring Le Pen and other former MEPs from elections for five years. Scandalous! Why should it matter that she was caught embezzling European Parliament funds? Or that EU money meant for legitimate purposes ended up paying party employees clueless about Brussels or Strasbourg?

“It hardly matters that those funds come from EU countries…”

Le Pen styled herself as the modern-day Robin Hood of Europe—robbing the rich EU institutions to fund her nationalistic agenda. She personally misappropriated €474,000 (of a total €4 million), roughly €17,555 per member state. To put this into perspective using Declassified’s questionable math skills, that could buy 11,396 pizzas per country (yes, pizza makes any story better). But beyond the cheesy anecdotes lies a deeper truth – we’re all somehow complicit in wanting to game the system.

“The truth is, we’re all Marine.”

Our collective desire to bend or break rules mirrors Le Pen’s actions on a grander scale. When caught red-handed like big toddlers caught with their hands in the cookie jar—we pout and stomp out of the room without acknowledging our faults. Now that Marine faces consequences and may fade from the limelight temporarily, who will fill her controversial shoes? The political landscape seems uncertain without our enfant prodige at center stage.

“And when they catch us…we’re all big loud toddlers.”

As we ponder this void in European politics left by Marine’s absence from headlines for now—the question arises: Who will be Europe’s next provocative figurehead? Will someone step up to claim her mantle as a divisive force challenging mainstream politics? Stay tuned for more political theatrics as the world eagerly awaits its next dose of controversy and intrigue.
