Turun Maarian kirkon vainajat varmistuivat muumioiksi – kaksi on vastasyntynyttä, kolmaskin on pikkulapsi

The ancient mystery beneath the floor of Turku’s medieval Maaria Church has captivated both historians and archaeologists alike. When the computer tomography results are finally analyzed, the secrets hidden within the remains of three child mummies will be unveiled. The discovery of these mummified infants has shed light on a long-forgotten chapter of history, offering a glimpse into the lives and deaths of these young souls from centuries past.

Led by the skilled archaeologist Kari Uotila from Muuritutkimus Oy, the excavation at Maaria Church during its renovation revealed a startling find beneath the floorboards – nearly 200 coffins dating back to ancient times. Among these, about twenty were carefully unearthed, with three small coffins containing the remains of children drawing particular attention. These tiny coffins were transported for further investigation, without disturbing their delicate contents, using cutting-edge technology like X-ray and computer tomography to peer inside without physical intrusion.

“These three individuals are highly mummified. We now have confirmation of what was suspected in the field,”

remarked Kari Uotila, emphasizing the significance of the findings. The advanced imaging techniques not only revealed the skeletal structures of the deceased but also provided insights into the textiles surrounding the bodies, offering a detailed picture of the children without the need to open the coffins. This non-invasive approach not only preserves the integrity of the remains but also facilitates future research and analysis.

As experts meticulously examine the tomography results, decisions on further studies and potential sampling strategies will be made post-summer. The collaboration between research teams aims to determine the most effective research methods, potentially uncovering valuable information about the children’s causes of death, prevalent diseases of the time, or any congenital conditions they might have had. Teija Tiitinen, an official from the Finnish Heritage Agency, noted the rarity of such mummy discoveries in Finland, underlining the unique research opportunities this find presents.

“The discovery of mummified children is a rare occurrence in Finland and offers a unique opportunity to delve into our past, uncovering valuable insights into historical health and societal conditions,”

expressed Tiitinen, highlighting the significance of this archaeological breakthrough. Once the investigations are concluded, the mummified remains will be respectfully returned to the Maaria parish and laid to rest in the churchyard, closing this chapter of exploration and discovery.

The story of the Maaria Church mummies serves as a poignant reminder of the rich tapestry of history waiting to be unraveled beneath our feet. Through the careful blending of modern technology and ancient remains, we can bridge the gap between past and present, honoring the lives of those long gone while shedding light on the enduring mysteries of our shared human experience.
